Son Heung-min was included in South Korea’s squad for the Qatar World Cup on Saturday, but it remains to be seen whether he will play after a serious facial injury. The South Korean captain and talisman suffered a fracture in his left eye during a Champions League match for Tottenham and then underwent surgery last week. “We are in contact with him and Tottenham’s medical department,” said South Korea’s Portuguese coach Paulo Bento, naming his squad.
“We don’t have information about the day he can train with the team,” he added.
“We need to wait, we need to analyze his condition day by day.
“We have time to make a decision. Most importantly (that is), he recovers as much as possible, he feels comfortable and then we will make the final decision.”
Bento named a 27th player, forward Oh Hyeon-gu, who will train with the team in Qatar and replace Son if he fails to make it.
South Korea’s first match is against Uruguay on 24 November.
The son, who has scored 35 goals in 106 internationals, wrote on social media this week that “I can’t wait to represent our beautiful country, see you soon”.
South Korea will also play Ghana and Portugal in Group H.
The South Korean team, lacking Son and other players from Europe, beat Iceland 1-0 in their home match on Friday.
